These children can go out and have children of their own, but they don't have a good basis for parenting. And they're running out of time.

Children who are older, I worry that they'll leave care feeling like what's happened in their lives is their fault. I don't want them going through life thinking that anything that's happened is their fault or that they're undeserving of unconditional love or a family.

We got a chance to meet a girl who spent most of her life in foster care. You could sense, even though she was over 18 and she wasn't going to be adopted, you could still sense how much she still wanted to be adopted, how much she wanted a place.

Unless there was an open heart, and caring hands, and listening ears, the children will not be able to correct their steps alone, or overcome their wrong habits that still need their parents’ efforts, patience and big and continuous support.

Overall, your want to present yourself to your child as an ally, empathetic to his feelings, and responsive to his needs - even when your needs are conflicting. If your goal is to enlist your child's cooperation in changing his behavior, find ways to be as aligned with his emotionally as possible. By earning your child's trust, you are much more likely to reach him with your point of view than if you approach him in opposition.

The more power you give your child in any discipline process, the more likely he will be to be able to make it work positively for himself.
