We have no information that this case relates to identity theft or bank fraud.

This is a very fashionable charge to bring against a company. This is one of the consequences, in this country, of being in the Internet industry. I think it's quite scandalous, they brought the weakest charges they had.

Regardless of how legitimate it looks, it's a fraud. No government agency or company is going to ask for sensitive information over e-mail.

While it may not be possible to eliminate the risk of fraud altogether, a company can at least identify it early and minimize its damage with proper planning, policies and procedures.
