People have been seeking out spirituality forever. And I think we live in a very consumerist and market-driven country. So it makes sense that the two would sort of collide in this way.

But there is a deeper part of it, a yearning for some kind of centeredness, a feeling of mindfulness, making the world a better place as opposed to contributing to its demise.

It's the idea that what you're buying reflects who you are, what your values are. It's not overtly political ... [but] it's someone who has sort of hippie values with a yuppie pocketbook.

We need to encourage each other to do what we want and not let it totally define us. You know? The things that people think define them aren’t valid either. You could see a girl who’s completely covered head-to-toe and who looks like the sweetest little thing in the world, and she could be the most horrendous human being on the planet inside.

Sometimes, people can be extraordinarily judgmental and closed-minded to anyone different or special, which is why it's so hard for young people in this day and age to be comfortable enough in their own skin to not listen to the people picking on them.

MoMA is one of the world's great cultural institutions with one of the world's premier Boards and Museum leadership. It is my distinct pleasure to work with such a talented and highly qualified group. I salute Bob Menschel for the high bar he has set and follow him in the position of Chairman with all the respect he has earned.
