Discovery scientists are paid to be innovative. That's what we are here for: to come up with new ideas for better medicines and to come up with new ways of making medicines faster, more efficiently and more cost-effectively.

Most of our ideas, at some point along the spectrum, will fail. So we're always trying to innovate the way we do what we do: to do the best science possible - because that's non-negotiable - but to do it better, faster and more cost-effectively. So innovation is built into every single thing the discovery scientists do.

I came to the pharmaceutical industry for many reasons, and one of the reasons was I wanted to have, hopefully, a larger impact on patients.

With the abundance of stellar scientists and research and clinical activities in and around the MaRS Discovery District and the fact that our Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President, Dr. Mansoor Mohammed, is a Canadian citizen, it was an easy and obvious choice for our expansion into the Canadian arena. Moving forward we anticipate establishing strong relationships with Canadian customers, partners and the government.

The cross-fertilization of ideas is right there. These breakthroughs do not come from one individual but groups of scientists.

I worry about scientists discovering that lettuce has been fattening all along. . . .
