Detroit is a rising hub of hip-hop culture, and we have two million names in our database, and a large percentage of those names come out of Michigan. Detroit is a big strong base for us.

All of this stuff that is going on is inextricably related to poverty.

Most of the lyrics, if you listen to the poetry of hip-hop, is about taking a devastating situation and making it better, coming up out of poverty.

One is that it could have been inspired by Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, which exploited Native-American culture. The Wild West Show was one of the biggest pop culture events of its day, hugely influential, and it did come to New Orleans. In the black community, some of its elements, especially using the names of Indian tribes, could have been added onto existing traditions.

If we want equity in the workplace, we need to be more thoughtful about how we collectively build the culture of success. A contest to out-perform peers for a prize or to become a top producer is not a universal form of motivation or measure of success. We may all be better served by workplaces and communities that foster co-operation rather than competition.

We had some very interesting reports on the figures and costs it takes to run a dual-track school system, and there are very few schools in the state that have both tracks. The real problem comes when in the same schools — overworking staff and teachers — so there are staffing issues that get interesting.
