You couldn't even get the diagnosis until about the mid-'80s. Earlier child psychiatrists thought kids were not even cognitively capable of getting depressed.

If an adult gets depressed and loses a year of function, they can generally get back close to where they were, but if a kid loses a year, it's really hard to catch up again in terms of development.

The real fix is connecting with kids.

Many of our Latino kids, that we have in our system, are brilliant kids.... but, we as a system have placed a value judgement that unless they can do it in our language, we don't give them credit for it.

They wanted just the kids to get wet, but I ... just jumped out there with them.

It is unbelievable in the 21st century that we have to have this type of situation to get kids to school.
