When we pulled out on Wednesday, the military had pretty much taken over the area. There were even officers from NYPD and LAPD so the security was really tightening down.

They were frisky, eager and exuberant, and they had all been friends in the States. They were plainly unthinkable. They were noisy, overconfident, empty-headed kids of twenty-one. They had gone to college and were engaged to pretty, clean girls whose pictures were already standing on the rough cement mantelpiece of Orr's fireplace. They had ridden in speedboats and played tennis. They had been horseback riding. One had once been to bed with an older woman. They knew the same poeple in different parts of the country and had gone to school with each other's cousins.

You know all that money we spend on the military ever year -- trillions of dollars? Instead, if we use this money to feed and clothe the poor of this world, which it would do many times over, then we can explore space, inner and outer, together, as one race.

When it's windy, that area gets high winds mainly because of the terrain. The winds get pulled through that valley, which allows them to pick up and intensify.

When you get those kinds of conditions and you get a jet stream that is moving right into that area, that is exactly what we're looking for in environmental conditions that can produce a ... tornado outbreak like we had yesterday.

In hindsight, I would have pulled her out and taken her somewhere else. Something should be done. Somebody should be held accountable for it.
