Well, it's hard to say who John was because he was such a complicated character, ... You know, he represents so many things to so many different people. And that, to me, was why I was fascinated to play him. John's certainly not one-note. As an actor, there was a lot to work with.

I’m not a singer by any means. If it was a fictional character where it was a made-up voice, it might have been harder. But I had a specific voice to go after, so I had to work specific muscles and really work at hitting certain notes. It was nice to have a recognizable voice as a goal.

In most films - especially in regards to the protagonist - really from the get-go they set up some scenario that endears that character to the audience. Or imbues him with some nobility or heroism or something.
