We want to be where the politicians are and where the voters are. I love being in Washington [D.C.]; it's often the nerve center. But now the nerve center has moved.

Texas is the nearest thing to heaven there is. We love our state but we are embarrassed by our weak government. We ignore 400,000 souls in Third World conditions with no electricity and no running water. We pay our teachers less than our football coaches, and we get the results you'd expect.

That's why we need to keep the pressure on and send a clear message to the politicians in Washington that we need a just immigration reform that includes provisions for 12 million immigrants who work and build America every day.

Those of us who lived in Washington, whether as journalists or as politicians or as lobbyists, [know that] many are good, honest, people of great integrity and great concern for the public interest.

[Democrats are already making political hay out of the loophole:] Only in Washington D.C. controlled by politicians could a politician have direct control over assets in a blind trust, ... Maybe we should call it a nearsighted trust.

It seems to me the American people never really forgave the Democrats for being right about Vietnam.
