We had wonderful crowds and they were larger than we could have hoped for,

The crowds in the big towns, with their mild, knobby faces, their bad teeth and gentle manners solid breakfasts and gloomy Sundays, smoky towns and winding roads, green fields and red pillar boxes.

No points were awarded. But bragging rights were established.

We had never been in better shape. It was surprising, but the minute they saw it, they sent samples out and we knew what it was within two or three days, and we were able to treat it. It was a great catch by the staff. If they hadn't got it, we'd have been in real trouble.
