We can only speculate how she eventually died. Was everyone from the hamlet there? Was there a priest there? We don't know.

You don't accidentally lose an ax that keeps you alive. They did it for religious reasons — they are offerings.

For many years the rain was pouring down and the crops failed. So first the people would start offering the gods food, and then tools and other things of value. When everything failed, the elders would decide to make the ultimate offering. There is no written history of what happened there, but what we do have is a record of human sacrifice.

The real 'Hamlet' is of course later, first performed in 1600, then performed with revisions in 1601, and eventually included in the First Folio after Shakespeare's death, ... It really has more in common with the two major works it comes between, the two great comedies 'As You Like It' and 'Twelfth Night'.

Which may have been Hamlet, Prince of Denmark's problem, who, besides having a name that makes him sound like a breakfast special at Sunnyside Morning Restaurant--something between a ham slice and a three-egg omelet--didn't have the smarts to figure out that when someone takes the trouble to come back from beyond the grave to tell you that he's been murdered, it's probably behooveful to pay attention--which is the adjectival form.
