It's a very intimidating moment for all of us to realize that this is really the first foray after August's passing when a play of his is going through these stages. I'm sure that if he were with us, he'd probably be rewriting to some degree. All we can do is make the very best result of the script that he left us.

One of the things I'm proudest of in my career is producing so much of August's work here. I'm going to believe that since August is such a feisty guy, he'll meet this health challenge like he's met the challenge of writing an extraordinary cultural history.

I can't accept that August won't do everything he can to overcome this. He can't give up. I hope he can continue and overcome this horrendous challenge. We are honored and privileged to have him among us.

August didn't drive. He moved on the surface on his own two feet. He was much more grounded in the community than most of us tend to be. We're all sort of fast-moving; the pace is not conducive to building relationships in the way that I think he did in this town.
