Today's announcement... is bad news for newspaper workers, readers, advertisers and for our communities.

Whenever you have one entity that is controlling news over that big of an area it poses concerns. I don't see where, in the long run, delivering less news is going to be good for readers, the community, or the industry.

We haven't given up yet. All the people we talk to in these communities want more news, not less.

The good news for workers is that job cuts during the summer months typically decline from the beginning of the year. If that occurs this year, we could see job-cut figures fall to their lowest level in several years.

This is disastrous news for British manufacturing. It is inconceivable that workers in France would be laid off on this scale.

I think both sides were very careful not to get into any particulars. The good news is we are having a dialogue. We don't appear to be at an impasse.
