Katrina was a devastating hurricane, not a financial windfall for the shameless.

After Hurricane Andrew, Florida laws were changed because it was a new landmark as the most devastating hurricane in the U.S.. In regards to insurance, people in Florida didn't pay their premium risk that they should have. That really changed insurance regulations and building codes.

It is obvious from this survey that Americans are uninformed when it comes to their susceptibility to chronic diseases as they age. Our society is both aging and living longer. Unfortunately, life after age 65 for most people means an increasing risk of developing age-related chronic diseases.

At this point, Rita has become a potentially very devastating Category 5 hurricane. Fortunately it's over the open ocean of the Gulf of Mexico, and will be over the open ocean for the next day. But we expect it to gradually make a turn to the north.

These are mostly elderly people with chronic diseases who were herded into the convention center with no medications, scared out of their minds. I don't know how they survived.
