They are valuable in a democracy. These parties will provide a legitimate democratic outlet for dissenting opinion.

I would suggest there's some sloppiness here. Neither mere negligence or gross negligence will suffice.

Communism is not the opposite of democracy. Communism and capitalism are economic systems. Democracy and totalitarianism are political systems. There are democratic communists and totalitarian capitalists.
