There seems to be a trend among empty nesters toward selling the house in suburbia and moving to a remodeled or restored home in downtown areas.

Prosperous suburbia was one of the end-states of history. Once achieved, only plague, flood, or nuclear war could threaten its grip.

From sandwich to summer school, they were the symbols of subservience and the enemies of freedom.

They can point to an empty chair.

After all, we were young. We were fourteen and fifteen, scornful of childhood, remote from the world of stern and ludicrous adults. In the long dusks of summer we walked the suburban streets through scents of maple and cut grass, waiting for something to happen.
