The whole day and evening at juvenile hall mimics what daily life is like in a normal family, what life should be like. Every one of these kids can be successful if the expectations are clear and they know you mean what you say. They need consistency and boundaries.

We like to remind them about empathy. They tend to depersonalize the person they victimized.

Wellington has improved things since then. We now have a specialist on in the evening but we still don't have one at night [overnight].

The water of the fountain ran, the swift river ran, the day ran into evening, so much life in the city ran into death according to rule, time and tide waited for no man, the rats were sleeping close together in their dark holes again, the Fancy Ball was lighted up at supper, all things ran their course.

It was a September evening, and not yet seven o'clock, but the day had been a dreary one, and a dense drizzly fog lay low upon the great city. Mud-colored clouds drooped sadly over the muddy streets. Down the Strand the lamps were but misty splotches of diffused light which threw a feeble circular glimmer upon the slimy pavement. The yellow glare from the shop-windows streamed out into the steamy, vaporous air, and threw a murky, shifting radiance across the crowded thoroughfare. There was, to my mind, something eerie and ghost-like in the endless procession of faces which flitted across these narrow bars of light,--sad faces and glad, haggard and merry. Like all human kind, they flitted from the gloom into the light, and so back into the gloom once more.

This pivotal piece easily makes the transition from day to evening.
