The Australian dollar is being marked down by association with the New Zealand dollar.

Most of these companies don't want to have the fluctuations, good or bad. When we saw the weakening dollar, it was a boon for companies like Coca-Cola ( Research ). But most companies hedge against the adverse scenario of a stronger dollar.

If Australia finds it has a strong Australian dollar, and it has higher unemployment, then it would have to respond, and that would either be by increasing domestic demand or by weakening its own currency.

The Australian dollar has been dragged down by the New Zealand dollar. Both currencies may well go through several months of under-performance.
