The city and province were given up to anarchy; the coloured people, elated with victory, proclaimed the slaughter of all whites, except the English, French, and American residents.

The people were simpler, more peaceable and friendly in their manners and dispositions; and assassinations, which give the southern provinces so ill a reputation, were almost unknown.

By the 1880s, English translations of both the French and the Russian editions were available, and Americans began to read 'War and Peace.'

I guess I didn't even realize this, but there are so many people who are city residents who actually have to put their bike in the car and drive to the ride [at other locations]. This is a great opportunity for them to just ride to Toscana, and we take off from there. I didn't realize there were so many people in the area that would do that. Why on earth do we want closer connection with England? We have little in common with English people except our language. We are fast becoming an entirely different people.

Americans are a can-do people, an enthusiastic people, a problem-solving people. And when given a direction and given a plan, they'll sign on.
