So far, the Chinese who have seen my work tend to see a mix of Eastern and Western cultures.

Because I look Asian, when I am showing in Europe or North America, people tend to approach my work as if it was made by someone completely immersed in the Asian tradition. There is an exotic aspect to the way people perceive my work. Asians from other places tend to relate to my work on a very visceral level.

Ghosts do frighten me but I think it is really a fear of the unknown. It is also the way that I was raised as a child in the Asian culture to believe in their existence. Yes, there is such a thing, their image changes, depending on my own state of being. I think ghosts have the ability to change form.

My interest in the potency of fear comes from my Taiwanese childhood in which fear of ghosts was used to shape my values.

I'm using kites because I like drawing and making installations. Kites allow me to translate my drawn images on to a large scale and be performed in the sky.

Emily trains very hard, and her hard work should really pay off this season.
