Self-regulation is not simply a moral characteristic. It is biologically healthy for both your mind and the body.

A woman may walk around naked in front of a man, but a civilized man would never jump over her, driven by his primordial state of arousal, regardless of an involuntary erection. Erection is involuntary, but whether a man would act on it, is voluntary.

A Neuroscientist can be the smartest man (or woman) on earth in his understanding of the human mind. He may know all the neurochemical changes underlying an outrageous behavior of a person. But when he gets mad himself, very little of his own scientific intellect would actually come in handy for him to control his rage. The virtue of self-control is a skill, which requires practice, regardless of all the neurobiological expertise in the world.

Trophies should go to the winners. Self-esteem does not lead to success in life. Self-discipline and self-control do, and sports can help teach those.

Time spent in assessing one's self, is the time spent best.
