Right now, anybody can throw up a shack and not stick a fire detector in there. If this bill does not pass, people will die. They'll burn to death unnecessarily.

When a local governing body wants to adopt a code, they can do it with a simple vote - they don't have to reinvent the wheel. They can adopt a code that is tested and used nationwide. They can have a level of confidence.

Right now the volunteer fire services are really struggling because you don't find the guy who closes the gas station and runs down the street and jumps on a fire engine anymore. The times have changed.

We are not going to allow the right of companies to fire at the snap of a finger to become entrenched in French law. We are not going to allow France to operate under the same rules as the socially most backward countries.

That put them right back in the game in a hurry. I think it re-energized our fire a little bit.
