Paul unfortunately has relapsed into alcohol abuse. It wasn't just away from the football club, it was prior to games, during games, in the dressing room, and during contract negotiations.

Paul Gascoigne has been under the influence of alcohol before, during and after several first-team games and training sessions. I have tried to help Paul through this difficult period but gave an undertaking to the board prior to my takeover that if Paul hit the bottle I would remove him as manager.

I thought football was what he needed, but being a manager has pushed him the other way.

Paul is my childhood idol and when sober is a wonderful person.

All I want is for Paul to seek further professional medical assistance for his addictions.

We've made a quantum leap forward in our efforts to prevent the use and abuse of alcohol. We've taken a strong stance and made some progress. Attitudes have changed. We're all in this together, shaping the way kids grow up and look at the idea of drinking.
