One of our core values is community. We felt that this program would also give something back to the community. Our students are actually contributing here to something in the real world.

It is so the community knows they don't have to go to Barrett (Parkway) or Gwinnet County, or wherever they're going. They can go right here in their backyard. That is the basis for getting this started in the first place.

I think Kimberly is a growing community. It is a community that values athletics. It's a one-horse town. There's no North-West rivalry, there's no three schools in the district. The kids in middle school know they are going to Kimberly High School. And that goes a long way in building loyalty and building a program.

This is a community issue that goes to the very core values of what we're trying to protect.

At our community level, it is a very, very deep issue. The underlying issue is family values--parents have to work odd shifts, for example, but who becomes responsible for staying at home with a 13-year-old when everybody's working? Kids today are without structure, and without structure, you're going to do what you want to do.

Our institutions and values are in jeopardy as the mores of the market pervade all social life in this country. Loyalty, honesty, courage, discipline, patriotism, and commitment to family are being crowded out by the goals and rules of economic rationality -- do whatever makes the most money.
