My work should trigger further interest in studying the effects of cadmium on wildlife. Birds are exceptionally good indicators of environmental problems. Because they have to eat a lot to stay alive, high levels of contaminants go through their system.

Our main interest is conserving the scenery and the wildlife in the park for generations to come, and one way to do that is through knowledge. So those cameras are a good way to get that information.

We take the clients to actual work sites where they have indicated an interest in working, as well as other work sites where they may not, so we can gather information on their skills.

Cadmium has a similar chemical structure as calcium. It attaches to the soil the same way that calcium would and competes with calcium for those binding sites. As calcium would normally move through the food web, cadmium moves through instead.

The findings are not unlike those that linked the pesticide DDT to the problem of laying thin eggs shells among peregrine falcons.

Some of the fires in Idaho and Montana are affecting wildlife habitat and salmon habitat in places we're trying to restore salmon runs, ... So the fire is working against us, and we're going to have a lot of work after the fires are out to try and rehabilitate these areas and try to reduce the risk of more resource damage.
