Most parents have long understood that kids don't have the judgment, the maturity, the impulse control and insight necessary to make complicated lifelong decisions.

The support has been great this year. The parents have really supported the kids.

My parents lived in a poor rural community on the Eastern Shore, and schools were still segregated. And I remember when lawyers came into our community to open up the public schools to black kids.

The parents get stigmatized as not having control over their kids when they can't get them to school in time. Children themselves get stigmatized as avoiding school or lazy. There's a lot of baggage associated with it.

The kids are resilient. They're moving on. They're handling it better than the adults. They're exhibiting a level of maturity that makes me proud.

The maturity of my kids made the difference tonight. Jon played patiently and just kept working, and his teammates played big.
