Look in moist, secluded woodlands in April and May to see the jack-in-the-pulpit. Its most noticeable feature is the three fleshy leaves that extend above the actual flower, hiding it from immediate view.

April is the right time in Delaware to head for the woods to see new growth, especially ground bloomers. You know it's spring when you see skunk cabbage flowers unfold from the forest floor. Don't let the name turn you off; this unusual plant has much to offer the environment despite its legendary odor.
