It's a terrible irony to see somebody who has done so much for bringing war criminals to trial in the former Yugoslavia...is now being brought up on a charge that he may have embezzled funds in the account of the Mission and only on the basis of a yet unconcluded investigation, ... This has to be a purposeful, political vendetta.

One wants to engage the local judiciary and the local population. It is important that any kind of post-conflict justice be owned by the people affected.

It's a win-win situation for Saddam and his cronies. He either goes in there and he takes over the proceedings, or he stays out and he turns out to be a martyr, which is an absolute tragedy for the victims.

America has lost its capacity for being indignant, ... Where has our capacity for indignation gone? When a nation loses its respect for the Constitution and its treaties, what is next? And leaving even that aside, the next American serviceman who is being tortured -- and we can't go to his rescue -- will show us exactly what we have done.

This has to be a purposeful, political vendetta.
