Il suicidio è così contrario a tanti nostri istinti e impulsi programmati che nessuno sano di mente va fino in fondo senza passare attraverso una marea di oscillazioni interne, con fasi in cui per poco non cambia idea ecc. Da questo punto di vista Kant, il logico tedesco, aveva ragione: gli esseri umani sono pressoché identici in termini di programmazione. Pur essendone solo di rado coscienti, fondamentalmente siamo solo strumento o espressione dei nostri impulsi evolutivi, a loro volta espressione di forze infinitamente più vaste e più importanti di noi. (Anche se esserne davvero coscienti è tutta un'altra cosa). Perciò non cercherò neppure di descrivere i vari momenti nel corso di quella giornata in cui mi sono seduto in soggiorno in preda a una furiosa crisi mentale sulla decisione di andare veramente sino in fondo. Tanto per cominciare, era intensamente mentale e richiederebbe un mucchio di tempo per esprimerla a parole, e poi risulterebbe ovvia o banale nel senso che molti dei pensieri e dei collegamenti erano in sostanza quel tipo di cose generiche che quasi tutti quelli sul punto di affrontare la morte finiscono per pensare.
