Il est également vrai qu'un échange est une transaction dans laquelle les deux contractants gagnent tous deux. Toutes les fois que je fais librement et sans contrainte un échange quelconque, c'est que je désire plus la chose que je reçois que celle que je donne, et qu'au contraire celui avec qui je traite désire plus ce que je lui offre que ce qu'il me rend. Quand je donne mon travail pour un salaire, c'est que j'estime plus ce salaire que ce que j'aurais pu faire en travaillant pour moi-même, et que celui qui me paie prise davantage les services que je lui rends que ce qu'il me donne en retour.
Quand je donne une mesure de blé pour une mesure de vin c'est que j'ai surabondamment de quoi manger, et que je n'ai pas de quoi boire ; et que celui avec qui je traite est dans le cas contraire.
Quand nous sommes plusieurs qui nous soumettons à faire un travail quelconque en commun, soit pour nous défendre contre un ennemi, soit pour détruire des animaux malfaisants, soit pour nous préserver des ravages de la mer, d'une inondation, d'une contagion, soit même pour faire un pont on un chemin, c'est que chacun de nous préfère l'utilité particulière qui lui en revient, à ce qu'il aurait pu faire pour lui-même pendant ce temps. Nous sommes tous satisfaits dans toutes ces espèces d'échange, chacun de nous trouve son avantage dans l'arrangement proposé.
