If you fail on either of these two counts, your case will disappear in front of your eyes.

What you don't want to have happen is jurors holding out, who really have a reasonable doubt, to think they're being held hostage.

While the judge is certainly within his right -- given the length of this trial and the amount of resources spent on it -- to really try to coax this jury into continuing its deliberation, there is a limit.

It goes on as long as the judge thinks he can get along with making it go on, the only standard is that it can't go on if it becomes coercive, and that's a judgment call.

It exists in utopia. In reality, there's no such things as the 'ultimate' anything. The only way to achieve it is in the lab, and even then, that's probably not even realistic.
