I never see myself as writing satire. I think I write about people as they really are, without making them better or worse.

I think I write in a fairly self-confident manner.

I don't think of myself as an illustrator. I think of myself as a cartoonist. I write the story with pictures - I don't illustrate the story with the pictures.

I write the shopping column. I think I've proven my superficiality.

I think there's a part of my brain where food, language, and memory all intersect, and it's really powerful. I think I'm not alone in this.

With my writing, what I want to do is humanize the young people I write about.
