I make extensive outlines before I write a book. I usually know what will happen. I know the characters, and I know what they are about.

Don't write outlines; I hate outlines.

I tend to write about my anxieties - it's what I'm afraid will happen. And I write a story working it out.

There's something about the shape that a poem takes in my mind before I write it that has to do with suddenness.
