I didn't find it all that rewarding. I really wanted to work with people in different ways. I wanted to work more directly with people on issues that are important to them.

There was a need and a feeling that, given the political shift of sands, we needed to have the confidence that we could always have the resources to do the work we needed to do.

The foundation is a 30-year old organization that aims to move society closer to the one we all imagine. We're aiming for a true democracy, where each woman and girl is valued.

I've enjoyed seeing the program grow. It has taken a lot of hard work, but now more people want to play. Our team has a lot of chemistry and that really helps us be successful.

We are going to build what these people think would be useful and beautiful. They are going to be the design team, and I am going to facilitate their work. My job in part is to keep them within a budget ... and tailor the project to the things that they actually can do.

The lessons of paternalism ought to be unlearned and the better lesson taught that while people should patriotically and cheerfully support their Government its functions do not include the support of the people
