I can remember only a few of the strange and curious words now dead but living and spoken by the English people a thousand years ago.

Some of the substance of English words, I just don't understand at all because the culture's so strange to me.

English people are always surprised I'm English.

Dickens belongs to the English people.

English people are so trapped in this class paradigm.

The English people, a lot of them, would not be able to understand a word of spoken Shakespeare. There are people who do and I'm not denying they exist. But it's a far more philistine country than people think.
