High oil prices and the emergence of a number of new players on the world stage - not just China and India but also Russia and even Iran - have made it possible to play the major powers off against each other.

European CEOs have to act much more as business politicians ... in the vacuum left over by a world where we have less and less boundaries, less and less power of national governments.

Globalization, for example, has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty while contributing to social fragmentation and a massive increase in inequality, not to mention serious environmental damage.

Europe has never had a single or unified voice in world affairs: a common foreign policy. It has often appeared to be rudderless and unable to make quick decisions when faced with economic crises, presenting instead an image of division and hopelessness.
