He had gotten separated from his boat. His friend had heard him yell for help. He proceeded toward his friend's general area and he saw him go under.

An elderly female was found the doorway leading from the parlor to the bedrooms in semi-conscious condition suffering from smoke inhalation. An elderly male was then found in the parlor unconscious and also suffering from smoke inhalation.
