Every single minute I think about this story, my mind turns to her family and the extraordinary risks she took to do her job over there.

When a reporter is held hostage, their whole society is held hostage, and that recognition is the most encouraging sign we can hold onto right now.

I think there is a critical mass of the Iraqi society recognizing that the lawlessness that's taken hold in Iraq is bad for anyone who cares about Iraqi society and a new democratic government emerging there. I think they recognize they're being held hostage.

And I had in mind more or less what we then did in the following 20 years. But the family was telling me, listen we are growing nicely, why should we take more risks.

It's mind blowing dealing with something like that, but you don't really expect a death in the family either. All you can do is sit and pray and pace the floors.

Our own system of trying to guess what or how much a child's mind can assimilate results in cross purposes, misunderstanding, disappointments, anger and a general loss of harmony.
