Có vẻ như là lúc nào anh cũng cố gắng trở thành một người khác. Có vẻ như là anh đã luôn muốn đi về phía những người và những nơi mới mẻ và khác lạ, để tạo lập một cuộc đời mới, trở thành người có tính cách khác hẳn. Anh đã làm đi làm lại điều đó rất nhiều lần trong đời, cho đến tận lúc này. Theo nghĩa nào đó, trở thành người lớn là như thế, và theo một nghĩa khác, mỗi lần chỉ là một lần thay đổi mặt nạ. Dù là gì đi nữa, trong khi tìm cách trở thành một người khác, anh đã cố gắng tự giải thoát khỏi những gì cấu tạo nên con người anh cho đến khi đó.
Anh thật sự nghiêm túc muốn trở thành một người khác, và anh từng tin rằng nếu nỗ lực đầy đủ anh sẽ làm được điều đó. Nhưng cuối cùng thì anh không đi đâu được hết cả. Anh vẫn là chính anh. Những khiếm khuyết, không thể khác được. Khung cảnh có thể thay đổi, âm thanh giọng nói dù có thay đổi ở xung quanh anh, anh vẫn cứ chỉ là một con người không hoàn hảo. Anh vẫn có những chỗ thiếu hụt như thế trong anh, những điều khơi dậy một sự thèm muốn mãnh liệt với cái khác. Một cơn khát và một cơn đói không thể thỏa mãn hành hạ anh, như là, cái này là chắc chắn, sẽ vẫn tiếp tục như vậy. Bởi vì, theo một nghĩa, những cái mặt nạ đó cùng là một phần của anh.
