After a witness makes a positive ID, if the investigator says something that validates the ID before asking how confident he or she is, later on, that information will likely inflate (their) confidence.

They're more likely to compare each photo to their original memory and make a positive ID if there's a match, or not make a match. You get many fewer false identifications.
